Jerry’s Crew and Fire and Ice, 2014

Working within a woodcarving workshop in Bataan, Philippines, the artist created a collaborative system in which craftsmen authored and produced carvings of their own design, breaking with institution’s parameters of fabrication. In temporarily shifting the value of labor toward facilitating modes of self-expression, the sculptures produced as a result of this project allowed for a recognition of the worker’s ideas in addition to his or her labor.
